Human Population Growth in the Amazon Rainforest
Many, if not all, of the following causes of rainforest destruction are closely linked to the exponential growth in human population. The disappearance of rainforests and biodiversity is proportional to the rate of expansion of the human population. There is a net growth of 44.7% in Latin America, especially Brazil. Deforestation in the Amazon is used to feed the growing demand for paper and other products. Also, the cattle ranching industry has increased in the Amazon in response to increased demand for meat. The same is true for the cash crop industry. The growth of these industries results in loss of biodiversity (Human Population Growth).
